Prof. Leonard Derkyi-Kwarteng is the Founding Rector of the College of Medicine and Allied Sciences, a private Medical College in North Legon, Accra. With a wealth of knowledge in clinical medicine, anatomic pathology, and healthcare management, he is also an Associate Professor of Pathology at the School of Medical Sciences, University of Cape Coast (UCC), Ghana. He has held several academic and leadership roles over his career, making substantial contributions to medical research, medical education, and healthcare policy. He has been an Associate Professor since August 2020, specializing in pathology, curriculum development, postgraduate research supervision, and academic program organization. He served as the Vice Dean of the University of Cape Coast’s School of Medical Sciences from August 2021 to July 2023, where he oversaw academic resources created plans to improve students, and facilitated institutional policy implementation. From August 2019 until July 2023, Prof. Derkyi-Kwarteng oversaw departmental operations and supported creative academic endeavors while serving as Head of the Department of Pathology at UCC-SMS and Cape Coast Teaching Hospital.

From August 2019 until July 2023, Prof. Derkyi-Kwarteng oversaw departmental operations and supported creative academic endeavors while serving as Head of the Department of Pathology at UCC-SMS and Cape Coast Teaching Hospital. He served as a Senior Specialist Pathologist at Cape Coast Teaching Hospital from April 2016 to July 2020, offering diagnostic services and taking part in clinical pathology education to other cadres of healthcare professionals. He oversaw clinical skills training for medical students as the coordinator of the Maersk Clinical Skills Teaching Center at UCC-SMS from August 2017 to July 2019. To ensure the efficient administration of academic evaluations, he also held the positions of Departmental Examination Officer from August 2015 to July 2016 and School Registration and Examination Officer from August 2018 to July 2019.

 

Earlier in his career, Prof. Derkyi-Kwarteng was a Foundation Lecturer in the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology and Department of Pathology, UCCSMS.

Prof. Derkyi-Kwarteng holds a PhD from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Ghana. He also earned an MBA in Health Services Management from the University of Ghana, an MB ChB (Medicine and Surgery) from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, and a BSc in Human Biology from the same institution. He is a member of the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons. Additionally, he has completed certifications in Project Management, Leadership and Management in Health, and Economic Evaluation in Global Health from the University of Washington, USA.

He has several peer-reviewed publications in both local and international journals with his research focusing on molecular pathology, non-communicable diseases, and diagnostic pathology. His leadership and academic contributions have significantly advanced healthcare delivery, research, and medical education in resource-limited settings.

Prof Derkyi-Kwarteng also served on the 10th Board of Medical and Dental Council.
